Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury is the most severe type of back or neck injury and is defined as damage to the spinal cord that results in loss of muscular control and sensation. Determining the severity of the spinal cord injury depends on two main factors:

  • Where the damage occurred to the spinal cord
  • The type and degree of damage

Damage may vary from a spinal cord concussion, which is a light injury generally disappearing in several hours, to a spinal cord bruises, or the most serious damage – spinal cord tears and transection. Transection is a complete severing of the spinal cord. In severe damage, the area of the body below the injury area is paralyzed. Injuries to the spinal cord may result in paralysis from the waist down, known as paraplegia, or complete paralysis from the neck down, which is called quadriplegia.

Caring for persons who are disabled because of spinal cord injury involves medical intervention, rehabilitation and life-long care, all of which create enormous expense. If the catastrophic injury resulted through fault of another, it’s important to retain a personal injury lawyer and file a claim as soon as possible. There are statutes of limitation on filing personal injury claims and a seasoned personal injury lawyer can not only assist with legalities, but also make a significant difference in the outcome of your case.
